The track mounts to the ceiling. The door hangs from the track. For the hardware assembly to fit correctly, the top of the door must be exactly 6 in below the mounting surface. Less than 6 in and the door won't fit under the track. More than 6 in and the door won't reach down far enough to engage the floor guide.
This is the measurement most customers miss. They measure the rough opening correctly and select the right track length, but don't account for how much space the hardware needs between the ceiling and the door top. If the clearance is anything other than exactly 6 in, ceiling mount hardware will not work correctly for your opening. Measure carefully before ordering.

What you need in the ceiling
Ceiling mount hardware requires a solid mounting surface in the ceiling — the same structural requirement as wall-mounted hardware, just oriented horizontally. Ceiling joists work, but they're not always located exactly where you need the track to sit.
The most reliable approach is the same one we recommend for wall installations: install blocking between joists, or use a header board fastened across the joists above the track location. This gives you a continuous solid surface to mount into and the flexibility to position the track exactly where the door needs it — rather than being constrained by joist spacing. At minimum, use hardwood 1 in thick and 6 in wide, spanning the full track length, fastened securely into the joists above.

The same rule applies as with all sliding barn door hardware: the track must be at least 2× the door width for the door to fully clear the opening. A 36 in door needs a minimum 72 in track. Measure the door panel — not the rough opening.
