Frequently Asked Questions

I have never had a barn door before. Where should I start?

Start by measuring your door opening and determining your door size. Our installation guide walks through the entire process step-by-step. For design inspiration, visit our Pinterest page or customer gallery. Our team is available 7 days a week at info@thebarndoorhardwarestore.com to help you get your order right.

What door thickness is compatible with this kit?

This J-Strap Single Track Ceiling Mounted Hardware Kit is compatible with doors from 1-3/8 inches to 1-3/4 inches thick. If your door is a different thickness, contact us for personalized assistance, as we may have spacer extenders or other solutions available.

Do I need a header board for this setup?

Yes. A header board distributes the door system's weight evenly across the wall to prevent drywall damage and allows flexible track placement without being limited to wall stud locations.

What type of wood is best for a header board?

Use hardwood that can support your door's weight. Good options include:

  • Red Oak – Strong, durable, attractive grain
  • White Oak – Strong with a lighter color
  • Maple – Excellent strength, clean appearance
  • Birch – Solid, affordable, readily available
  • Poplar – Consistent and easy to paint

Avoid softwoods like pine, which may not support the door's weight over time.

What are the recommended dimensions for a header board?

Minimum 1" thick and 6" wide. Length should extend to the next wall stud beyond each end of the track to ensure full support.

What are the track dimensions for this kit?

The robust steel track included in this kit measures 1/4 inch in thickness and 1-1/2 inches in width.

Do you offer custom track lengths?

Yes, we can provide custom track lengths to fit your unique project. Contact us for assistance.

Is this hardware suitable for outdoor use?

This powder-coated steel hardware can be used outdoors in covered areas, but exposure to rain or high humidity may cause rust over time. For outdoor installations or coastal environments, we recommend our Stainless Steel Hardware, which is specifically engineered for weather resistance.

Is there a weight limit for the included wheels?

Yes, the included wheels are best for doors weighing less than 150 pounds. For heavier doors (up to the track's weight limit), we recommend using metal wheels.

What material are the roller wheels made from?

The roller wheels are manufactured using high-quality nylon. This material ensures smooth, quiet operation as the roller glides along the track.

How do I adjust the space between the door and the wall?

You can adjust the space by using a thicker header board behind the track or by using our adjustable spacers, which are installed between the track and the wall to precisely control the gap.

Can I extend the track if it’s too short?

Yes, we offer additional track sections with mounting hardware that can be seamlessly connected to your current track to achieve your desired length.

Can I convert this to a double track bypass system?

Yes, conversion kits are available to change a single track system to a double track bypass. For detailed information, please email us at info@thebarndoorhardwarestore.com for assistance.

Is there a size limit for doors used with this hardware?

To prevent a door wider than 4 feet from warping, we recommend using additional hangers to distribute the weight evenly.

Is a floor guide essential for this installation?

Yes. The included floor guide keeps your door aligned with the track and prevents swinging, ensuring smooth operation and preventing the door from shifting away from the wall. It's a small component that makes a significant difference in performance.

Is there a warranty for this product?

Yes, this product is backed by a limited lifetime manufacturer’s warranty covering defective parts under normal installation and use.

Do you have installation examples I can look at?

Yes. Visit our Pinterest page and customer showcase gallery for hundreds of real installation photos showing different styles, finishes, and room applications.

Love the product with one exception. When connecting both rails, the holes were slightly off. Even though the door goes across the entire rail okay, because of the slight difference between where the rails meet, there is a little drop when closing the door and a little trip to make it over the connection point of the two pieces which form the continuous rail when opening the door. Aside from that, quality materials and love the look of it.

Installation tips

I just finished the install. Overall it went very well. One thing worth noting is that unless you want to use a header board, and if mounting to the joists is important to you, you might want to consider getting a longer track than you need so that you can get the spacing correct. Case in point, for the 8-foot kit, the middle 5 holes are 16" on center. The outboard holes are IIRC, 14.5" from the last 16" center holes. Also, for assemblingthe tracks together, one of the interlocking joints was perfect, but I had to tweak the other one with a small file. Andrew was great at answering questions, both pre and post sales.
