Common Questions

The strike plate mounts to the face of the door and travels with it as it slides. The latch body mounts to the inside of the door jamb — the wall surface the door face is perpendicular to when closed. When you want the door to stay closed, flip the arm 90 degrees so it hooks over the strike plate on the door face. Because the latch body stays fixed on the jamb, nothing protrudes from the moving door to catch on anything as it slides open. Flip it back to release. It works for any single sliding barn door because the door face and jamb are always at a 90-degree angle to each other at the closed position.

It keeps the door from sliding open — it's a privacy latch, not a security lock. Someone on the other side cannot slide the door open while the latch is engaged, but it does not lock with a key and is not designed to resist forced entry. For bathroom and bedroom privacy, it's the right solution. For rooms requiring true security, a keyed lock is the appropriate choice — see our locks and latches collection.

Stainless steel doesn't rely on a surface coating to resist moisture. The matte black version is powder-coated carbon steel — suitable for dry interiors but not rated for sustained moisture exposure. Choose stainless for bathroom installations where humidity is ongoing, coastal properties, or any outdoor or covered exterior application where the latch will be exposed to moisture over time.
