The hidden roller kit conceals the entire roller mechanism behind the door panel. The roller assembly mounts to the back face of the door — not the front — so when the door is installed and closed, there is no visible hardware on the door surface at all. The track mounts to the wall header the same way standard sliding hardware does, but the door hangs in front of it, hiding the roller from the room side. What remains visible: the track face at each end beyond the door's width, track stops, and wall mounting hardware.

Two roller options are available: Standard (up to 125 lbs) and Heavy Duty (up to 250 lbs). Made to order by Goldberg Brothers in Colorado, custom-cut to your specified track length, and backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Ships in 10–15 business days.

If visible hardware is part of your design intent — the J-strap, wagon wheel, or any other decorative hanger style — standard Goldberg Brothers hardware is the right choice. Hidden roller is for installations where concealed hardware is the priority.

Door weight: Up to 125 lbs with Standard Roller; up to 250 lbs with Heavy Duty Roller. Not sure which to choose? If your door is solid hardwood or a heavy panel, go Heavy Duty — there's no downside to choosing the higher-capacity roller.

Door width: Your door must be wider than the rough opening. For standard rooms plan for 2 in of wall overlap on each side — opening + 4 in. For bedrooms and bathrooms, 3 in per side gives better privacy — opening + 6 in. Minimum functional overlap is 1/2 in per side. See our measuring guide for full sizing formulas.

Door height: Hidden roller door height is calculated differently from standard sliding hardware. The roller assembly mounts to the back of the door in the space above the rough opening, so the door must be significantly taller than the opening. Door height = rough opening height + 4-3/8 in minimum; opening + 5 in is recommended for comfortable installation clearance. This is the most common measurement mistake on hidden roller installations — if the door isn't tall enough, the assembly won't fit.

Door thickness: 1 in or thicker.

Ceiling clearance above rough opening: Unlike standard sliding hardware — where clearance is measured from the top of the door — hidden roller clearance is measured from the top of the rough opening. The ceiling must be at least 4-3/8 in above the top of the rough opening; 5 in is recommended. Measure this before ordering. If your ceiling runs close to the top of the opening, confirm this clearance first.

Wall clearance beside opening: Must equal full door width on the slide side. Limited clearance? See bypass hardware or bifold hardware.

Wall header: A solid header above the opening is required for track mounting. If there is no existing header or backing in the wall, we recommend installing a minimum 1×6 hardwood board (3/4 in thick × 5-1/2 in wide) that extends past the length of the track to the next stud or structural support point on each side. The track must be at least 2× the door width for the door to fully clear the opening. Measure the door panel — not the rough opening.

Single door: 2× door width — e.g. 40 in door → 80 in track minimum

Biparting (2 doors): 2× combined door width — e.g. two 32 in doors → 128 in track minimum

For biparting: add both door widths together first, then double the combined total. Ordering a track that's too short is the most common mistake — the door won't fully clear the opening. When in doubt, order the next size up. Hidden roller hardware is one of the most requested styles we carry, and for good reason — when it's installed correctly, the door appears to float with no visible hardware from the front. The key is a technique called back-mounting, and once you understand it, the rest of the install follows the same logic as a standard barn door setup.

Common Questions

What exactly is hidden — and what's still visible?

The entire roller mechanism is hidden — the assembly mounts to the back face of the door, so it's concealed behind the panel from the room side. What remains visible: the track itself at each end beyond the door's width (the door covers the track where it passes behind it, but the ends are exposed), plus the track stops and wall mounting hardware. If you want to hide those track ends as well, the only option is to build out the wall or cabinetry around them — the track itself is always wall-mounted and visible at its ends.

Why does the door need to be so much taller than the opening?

With standard sliding hardware, the roller sits above the door and the door only needs to be 1 in taller than the opening for coverage. With hidden roller hardware, the roller assembly mounts to the back of the door and positions itself above the rough opening — between the top of the opening and the ceiling. The door needs to be 4-3/8 in taller than the opening minimum to give the assembly enough vertical space to mount correctly. This is the most common measurement mistake on hidden roller installations.

Which roller should I choose — Standard or Heavy Duty?

If your door is a standard hollow-core or solid-core panel in the 25–80 lb range, the Standard Roller at 125 lbs gives comfortable headroom. If your door is solid hardwood, reclaimed wood, or any panel you're not confident is under 100 lbs, choose Heavy Duty. The capacity difference (125 lbs vs 250 lbs) is significant, and there's no downside to going Heavy Duty other than a modest price difference. When in doubt, upsize.

Can I add soft close to a hidden roller kit?

No — soft close is not compatible with hidden roller hardware. The back-mounted roller assembly doesn't allow for the soft close mechanism used with standard Goldberg Brothers hardware. If soft close is important to you, standard Goldberg Brothers hardware with soft close is available — see our standard sliding hardware collection.

Is hidden roller compatible with bypass or cabinet configurations?

Yes — hidden roller is available for single track, bypass, and cabinet configurations.
