Before first use, condition the panels by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface, then erase it; this primes the surface and prevents permanent ghosting from the first marks you write. Standard chalk works on the surface; chalk markers also work but may be harder to erase fully. The panels are fully opaque — no light passes through.

Yes — the chalkboard panels ship separately and slide into the pine frame during assembly. The panels are pre-cut to fit. Handle them with gloves. Epoxy adhesive such as E6000 is optional but can help secure the panels firmly in place. The frame itself assembles with the included dowels and screws.

No — the stain applies to the pine frame only. The chalkboard panels have a fixed dark matte surface that is not stained. When selecting a stain color, you're choosing the finish for the frame stiles and rails around the panels — lighter stain colors like Unfinished, White, or Tinsmith Gray can create a nice contrast against the dark chalkboard surface.

Yes, with a few considerations. The chalkboard panels are fully opaque, so there are no privacy concerns. Use the 6 in formula (add 6 in to the opening width, divide by 2) when selecting your panel width. Barn doors don't seal at the edges or at the center meeting point, so if sound isolation is a concern, a hinged door is more effective. For privacy in a bathroom, a properly sized chalkboard barn door works well.
