Before first use, condition the panels by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface, then erase it; this primes the surface and prevents permanent ghosting from the first marks you write. Standard chalk works on the surface; chalk markers also work but may be harder to erase fully. The panels are fully opaque — no light passes through.

Yes, with a few considerations. The chalkboard panels are fully opaque, so there are no privacy concerns. Add 6 in to your opening width when selecting your door width. Barn doors don't seal at the edges, so if sound isolation is a concern, a hinged door is more effective. For privacy in a bathroom, a properly sized chalkboard barn door works well.
