Yes — the chalkboard panels are functional writing surfaces. Before first use, condition the panels by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface, then erase it; this primes the surface and prevents permanent ghosting from the first marks you write. Standard chalk works well; chalk markers also work but may be harder to erase completely. The panels are fully opaque — no light passes through.

Yes — the chalkboard panels ship separately and slide into the pine frame during assembly. The panels are pre-cut to fit. Handle them with gloves. Epoxy adhesive such as E6000 is optional but helps secure the panels firmly once seated. The frame assembles with the included dowels and screws.

No — the stain applies to the pine frame only. The chalkboard panels have a fixed dark matte surface and are not stained. When selecting a frame finish, consider the contrast against the dark panels — lighter finishes like White or Tinsmith Gray create a stronger visual contrast. White and Tinsmith Gray are applied as a light paint layer to the frame; the wood grain remains visible through those finishes.

The chalkboard panels add significant weight compared to solid pine panels of the same size. A 40 in solid pine door weighs approximately 54–58 lbs; the same width with chalkboard panels weighs 101 lbs. This doesn't cause hardware compatibility issues — all standard HVL hardware kits are rated well above these weights — but it does mean two people are needed for installation, and it's worth confirming capacity if you're pairing with older or non-standard hardware.
