Common Questions

The J-strap has a characteristic curved profile — the strap bends in a J shape as it connects to the roller assembly. The flat top strap is a clean, straight vertical bar with no curve. From the front both mount to the door face, but the flat top strap reads as more contemporary and minimal. Neither is inherently better — it's a style decision for the space.

Three reasons: your door is over 125 lbs (the standard straight strap's limit), your door is thicker than 1-3/4 in, or you need a finish outside the four available in the standard duty line. The flat top strap handles up to 400 lbs and is available in all 17 Goldberg Brothers finishes — the same capacity and finish range as the heavy duty J-strap, with a flat profile instead of a curve.

If quiet operation matters — bedroom, bathroom, shared wall — Delrin wheels are worth adding. They're noticeably quieter than steel wheels. The tradeoff: Delrin is only available in black, so upgrading changes the wheel color to black regardless of your hardware finish. For most installs the wheels aren't the first thing you see, but confirm that works for your project before selecting.

Yes. If you're choosing the flat top strap on a lighter door because you need a specific finish or prefer the wider hardware aesthetic, that's a completely valid reason. There's no minimum weight requirement — only a maximum of 400 lbs per door.

Yes — more so than on lighter doors. A heavy door builds real momentum as it slides and hits the track stop hard without a damper. Soft close decelerates the door in the last few inches of travel, reducing the impact on the stop and wall over time. We'd recommend it on any heavy door regardless of the room.
