Common Questions

The J-strap's curved design provides a slightly different load distribution geometry than the straight strap. Both use the same Delrin wheels and the same track, but the J-strap is rated to 200 lbs per door and the straight strap to 125 lbs. If your door is between 125 lbs and 200 lbs and you prefer the flat strap aesthetic, email us — we can advise on the right hanger for your specific door weight.

The J-strap has a characteristic curved profile — the strap bends in a J shape as it connects to the roller. The straight strap is a clean, flat vertical bar with no curve. From the front, the straight strap reads as more minimal and contemporary. The J-strap has a more traditional barn door look. Neither is inherently better — it's a style choice for the space.

J-strap. At 130 lbs your door is over the straight strap's 125 lb limit. The J-strap kit handles up to 200 lbs and is the right choice for that weight. If the flat strap aesthetic is important to your project, our heavy duty hardware includes a flat top strap rated to 400 lbs.

For bedroom doors, bathroom doors, doors on shared walls, or any high-traffic door in a home with kids — yes. For a pantry or utility door that gets light use, it's optional. Soft close can be added before checkout or retrofitted after installation if you change your mind later.

This kit accommodates doors from 1‑3/8 in to 1‑3/4 in only. For doors up to 2‑1/4 in thick, see our heavy duty hardware which includes flat top strap options at heavy duty capacity.
