Door width and hanger count: Two hangers handle doors up to 48 in wide. Between 48 and 60 in, a third hanger is optional. Above 60 in it's required. A third hanger isn't a checkout option — request one on our custom quote page with your door width and we'll spec it.

Wall clearance beside opening: Must equal full door width on the slide side. Limited clearance? See bypass or bifold hardware.

Ceiling clearance above the door: 5-1/2 in minimum, measured above the top of the door — not above the rough opening. A taller door raises the track, so measure against your final door height.

Wall header: A 1×6 hardwood header board is the minimum for every installation — oak, maple, or poplar, not pine. It spreads the load, and it decouples the track's bolt spacing from your stud spacing, since the track's mounting holes rarely line up with studs. At 400 lbs this matters: the full weight of the door transfers through the track mounting points. Run the board past the length of the track to the next stud on each side and lag-bolt it into the framing with 3/8 in × 3 in lag bolts. Never mount to drywall alone. For an exterior install, use a material and fastener rated for the exposure — the hardware is corrosion-resistant, but the backing behind it needs to be too. Ceiling mount is not an option at this capacity; that hardware is a separate line rated to 220 lbs.

Door width: Your door must be wider than the rough opening. For standard rooms plan for 2 in of wall overlap on each side — opening + 4 in. For bedrooms and bathrooms, 3 in per side gives better privacy — opening + 6 in. If wall space is tight, 1/2 in per side is the minimum functional overlap, but treat that as a floor rather than a target. See our measuring guide for full sizing formulas.

Door height: Measure the rough opening height and add 1 in minimum — the extra inch covers the top of the opening, and the hardware sets a 3/8 in gap at the floor. If there is casing or trim above the opening, the door needs to be at least as tall as the top of that casing so the track clears it entirely. Never mount the track to trim. Going taller raises the track, so recheck your ceiling clearance before ordering. For exterior installs over gravel, a raised threshold, or uneven ground, allow additional floor clearance. With thick carpet, confirm the clearance holds along the full travel path.

Trim beside the opening: The kit includes spacers that set the track's baseline standoff, but clearing projecting casing or baseboard takes extra spacers — that's the trim clearance kit you select above. Measure how far your trim stands off the wall and match it: 1/2 in, 7/8 in, or 1-1/4 in. Projecting more than 1-1/4 in? Contact us before ordering.

Fastener finish: stainless bolts with Raw Stainless; powder-coated bolts with Matte Black Texture and Black. All three finishes ship a matched fastener — stainless is the only tier where that's true, so the bolt heads on the door face won't read as a contrast the way they do on powder-coated steel.

Lag bolt length varies by kit and mounting setup — confirm the exact length in your kit's instruction manual rather than buying substitutes ahead of time.

Spacers are included for the track's baseline standoff. If casing or baseboard projects from the wall, you'll need extra spacers on top of those — that's the trim clearance kit in the options above, matched to your door thickness as well as the trim depth, so make both selections before checking out.

Tracks over 7 ft 6 in ship in multiple sections with connecting plates included. Your header board needs to span continuously across the joint.

If you have finished hardwood, tile, or LVP, you'll need a wall-mounted floor guide instead of the included floor-mounted T-guide.

Stainless kits don't include handles or a latch, and clearing projecting trim takes an extra spacer set — plan for these before checkout:

The track must be at least 2× the door width for the door to fully clear the opening. Measure the door panel — not the rough opening.

• Single door: 2× door width — e.g. 36 in door → 72 in track
• Biparting (2 doors): 4× each door's width, which is the same as 2× the combined width — e.g. two 36 in doors → 144 in track

For biparting, size each door to (opening + 4 in) ÷ 2, then add both widths together and double the total. Worth knowing if you're deciding between one door and two: a biparting pair needs the same total track length a single door would need over the same opening.

The lengths listed in the options above are stock sizes. They ship as ordered and return under the standard 25-day window.

If the length you need isn't listed, request a custom quote. Goldberg Brothers cuts the track to your exact length at the factory, priced the same as the next standard size up, and the limited lifetime warranty stays intact. The trade-off: a length cut to order is a custom order and can't be returned, so confirm your measurement before you submit it. Stainless does have one advantage if a track ever has to be cut on site — the cut face is the same alloy as the rest of the track, so no rust inhibitor is needed, unlike powder-coated steel. Cutting on site still voids the track warranty, so the factory cut is the better route.

Goldberg Brothers rollers use sealed bearings that run dry. Do not lubricate the track or rollers. Silicone spray, WD-40, and white lithium grease all attract dust, build up in the channel, and make the door harder to roll, not easier. If a door starts to drag or squeak, the cause is almost always debris in the track or a level issue — wipe the track channel with a dry cloth and check that the hardware is still tight. On an exterior install, clear grit and salt from the channel more often than you would indoors; stainless resists corrosion, but abrasive debris still increases rolling resistance.
