Common Questions

The weight limit on top mount hardware comes from the mounting position, not the hardware size. When you mount to the top edge of the door, the screws holding the hanger are in tension — the threads are what hold the door's weight. Screws in tension are limited by the strength of those threads. Face-mounted hardware is different: those screws go through the door horizontally and are loaded in shear, which is a much stronger orientation for a fastener. Wider, heavier hardware doesn't change that fundamental constraint — which is why the capacity stays at 100 lbs regardless of whether this is the standard or heavy duty version.

Three reasons: your door is thicker than 1‑3/4 in (this kit handles up to 2-1/4 in where the standard tops out at 1‑3/4 in), you need a finish outside the four available on the standard duty line, or you want color-matched steel wheels. The standard J top mount ships with nylon wheels — the heavy duty version includes steel wheels that match your hardware finish. If none of those apply, the standard J top mount is the lower-cost option for the same result.

The track above the door and the track stops are visible. The hanger arm sits on top of the door edge — visible above the door, but not on the front face. From straight-on you see the door panel, the track, and the hanger arm above the door top. No straps on the door face.

Adding additional rollers can increase load capacity by distributing the weight across more mounting points. Email us at info@thebarndoorhardwarestore.com with your door weight and dimensions and we'll put together options and pricing.

If quiet operation matters for the space, yes. Delrin wheels are noticeably quieter than steel. The tradeoff: Delrin is only available in black, so upgrading swaps your color-matched steel wheels for black Delrin regardless of the hardware finish you've chosen. For most installs the wheel color isn't prominent, but worth confirming before you select.
