The J-strap is the most popular barn door hanger style we carry — and the one most people picture when they think of barn door hardware. The curved strap attaches to the front face of the door and cradles the roller that rides along the track. It's a clean, functional design that works in farmhouse, modern farmhouse, and contemporary spaces without leaning too rustic.

This kit is Goldberg Brothers standard duty hardware — made to order in the USA to your specified track length and finish. Tighter engineering tolerances, better bearings, and a powder coat that holds up noticeably better over time than comparable hardware at this price point. Wall clearance beside opening: Must equal full door width on the slide side. Limited clearance? See bypass or bifold hardware.

Wall header: A solid header above the opening is required for track mounting. If there is no existing header or backing in the wall, we recommend installing a minimum 1×6 hardwood board (3/4 in thick × 5-1/2 in wide) that extends past the length of the track to the next stud or structural support point on each side. Ceiling clearance above door: 4-1/2 in required. Less clearance? See straight strap or horseshoe hardware (4 in).

Door width: Your door must be wider than the rough opening. For standard rooms plan for 2 in of wall overlap on each side — opening + 4 in. For bedrooms and bathrooms, 3 in per side gives better privacy — opening + 6 in. Minimum functional overlap is 1/2 in per side. See our measuring guide for full sizing formulas.

Door height: Measure from finished floor to the top of the rough opening and add 1 in. The extra inch covers the top of the opening while leaving 1/2 to 1 in of clearance at the bottom for the door to slide without dragging. If you have thick carpet, check that clearance is adequate along the full travel path before ordering.

Tracks over 7'6" ship in multiple sections with junction plates included. The connection is not visible once installed. Handles and soft close are not included — add them separately before checkout if needed.

The included floor guide is floor-mounted and requires screws into the floor. If you have finished hardwood, tile, or LVP, you'll need a wall-mounted floor guide instead — it does the same job without drilling into the floor.

For installation, mount into solid blocking or a header board — at minimum a 1×6 hardwood — to distribute the door's weight across multiple studs and ensure a secure long-term mount. Step-by-step install guides are available for every kit.

Hardware kits don't include handles or a latch — plan for these before checkout to avoid a second shipment:

Handles: Bar pull or D-pull for the room-facing side — browse our handles collection
Flush pull: For the wall-facing side if the door needs to be operated from both sides — browse our flush pulls collection

The track must be at least 2× the door width for the door to fully clear the opening. Measure the door panel — not the rough opening.

Single door: 2× door width — e.g. 36 in door → 72 in track

Biparting (2 doors): 2× combined door width — e.g. two 36 in doors → 144 in track

For biparting: add both door widths together first, then double the combined total. Every track is custom-cut to your specification. If the length you need isn't listed, request a custom quote — non-standard lengths are priced the same as the next standard size up.

Common Questions

How does the J-strap attach to the door?

The J-strap mounts to the front face of the door — you'll see the strap and roller from the front. The curved strap wraps over the roller, which rides along the top of the track. No routing or back-face mounting required.

My door is over 200 lbs — can I still use a J-strap?

Yes, but not this kit. Goldberg Brothers makes a heavy duty J-strap rated to 400 lbs with a wider 2 in track and steel wheels built for heavier loads. See our heavy duty hardware collection.

Is soft close worth adding?

For bedroom doors, bathroom doors, doors on shared walls, or any high-traffic door in a home with kids — yes. For a pantry or utility door that gets light use, it's optional. Soft close can be added before checkout or retrofitted after installation if you change your mind later.

Do I need a header board?

Yes. Mount into either solid blocking inside the wall or an external header board — at minimum a 1×6 hardwood spanning the full track length. This distributes the door's weight across multiple studs rather than concentrating it at a single point, and gives you flexibility to position the track exactly where you need it.

What if my door is thicker than 1‑3/4 in?

This kit accommodates doors from 1‑3/8 in to 1‑3/4 in. For doors up to 2‑1/4 in thick, see our heavy duty hardware. If you're working with something outside that range, email us before ordering.
