Door width: For three equal-width panels, each door = (opening + 8 in) ÷ 3. This accounts for a recommended 2 in of overlap between each adjacent door pair (2 junctions × 2 in = 4 in) and 2 in of wall overlap on each outer door (2 sides × 2 in = 4 in). Example: 60 in opening → (60 + 8) ÷ 3 = 22-2/3 in per door.

Door height: Opening height + 1 in. Leaves 1/2 to 1 in of floor clearance. Check clearance is adequate along the full travel path, especially with carpet.

Door thickness: 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in.

Ceiling clearance above door: 10 in required between the top of the door and the ceiling. This is higher than single or double bypass because the bracketry that supports the second and third tracks extends further up the wall.

No flush closure: Triple bypass — like all bypass configurations — cannot achieve a flush center seal. The door layers sit at different depths. If flush closure is a requirement, bypass is not the right configuration.

Wall header: A solid header above the opening is required for track mounting. If there is no existing header or backing in the wall, we recommend installing a minimum 1×6 hardwood board (3/4 in thick × 5-1/2 in wide) that extends past the length of the track to the next stud or structural support point on each side. Triple bypass track length depends on one decision: do you need pass-through access, or do you want the entire opening fully cleared?

Pass-through (partial access)

Doors slide to one side but don't fully clear the opening. The track needs to be slightly wider than the opening, accounting for your desired door overlap on each side when closed.

Track = opening + door overlap each side. Example: 68 in opening + 2 in overlap each side = 72 in → select 6 ft 7 in track.

Clear opening (fully unobstructed access)

All three doors stack fully to one side. Use the individual door panel width — not the rough opening — for this calculation:

3 doors: 4× door width. Example: three 22-2/3 in panels (60 in opening) → 4 × 22-2/3 = 90-2/3 in → select 8 ft track.

For a partial stack somewhere between pass-through and full clear, email us with your opening width and target clearance and we'll calculate the right length. Non-standard track lengths are priced the same as the next standard size up.

Floor guide note

For full clear opening setups, we recommend upgrading from the included floor-mounted point guides to a continuous floor guide — a routed aluminum channel embedded in the floor that keeps each door's bottom edge constrained across its full travel distance. The tradeoff: the continuous guide requires permanently routing a slot in your flooring. If that's not an option, the included point guides work, but managing smooth door travel across a long distance requires careful setup. See our floor guides collection for options.
