Common Questions

A 2-door bifold uses two panels that fold and stack to one side of the opening — both panels go the same direction, folding into 5 in of depth. A 4-door biparting uses four panels folding from the center, two stacking to each side, 5 in per side. If you only have wall clearance on one side, the 2-door kit is your option. If you have clearance on both sides and want a symmetrical look when open, biparting is the fit. Note that on bifold hardware, biparting means 4, 8, or 12 panels — there's no such thing as a 2-door biparting bifold, since two panels can only fold one direction. Our bifold measuring guide compares all six configurations with panel sizing for each.

A standard sliding door needs clear wall space equal to the full door width — the door travels its entire width to clear the opening. A 2-door bifold folds both panels together into just 5 in of depth on the stack side. That's the practical advantage in tight spaces: as long as you have 5 in of wall clearance on the stack side, the doors fully clear the opening regardless of panel width. The trade-off is room depth rather than wall width — the folded panels swing perpendicular to the wall and reach into the room by the panel width plus 1/2 in.

The hardware holds the panels 1/2 in off the wall, so the perimeter light gap is 1/2 in — tighter than most people expect from a folding door, and much tighter than any bypass configuration, where the outer door rides well off the wall. For a bathroom or bedroom, bifold is close to a single sliding door on privacy.

The pull handle goes on the loose panel — the one without the wall-mounted pivot. Install it with the vertical center approximately 35 in from the bottom of the panel. The hardware can be configured to stack either right or left; the installation instructions apply in mirror image for the opposite direction.

No — soft close is not available for any bifold configuration. The mechanism works against a door sliding on a single track and doesn't translate to a folding pair. Ceiling mount is also unavailable on bifold, so a solid wall header above the opening is required.
