Common Questions

A 2-door bifold uses two panels that fold and stack to one side of the opening — all panels go the same direction. A 4-door biparting uses four panels that fold from the center, with two panels stacking to each side. If you only have wall clearance on one side, the 2-door kit is your option. If you have clearance on both sides and want a symmetrical look when open, biparting is the better fit. See our bifold measuring guide for a full comparison of all configurations.

A standard sliding door needs clear wall space equal to the full door width — the door travels its entire width to clear the opening. A 2-door bifold folds both panels together into just 5 in of depth on the stack side. That's the practical advantage for tight spaces: as long as you have 5 in of wall clearance on the stack side, the doors can fully clear the opening regardless of panel width.

The pull handle goes on the loose (non-pivot) panel — the one without the wall-mounted pivot. Install it with the vertical center approximately 35 in from the bottom of the panel. The hardware can be configured to stack either right or left — the installation instructions apply in mirror image for the opposite direction.

Yes — a solid header is required for track mounting, the same as all wall-mounted barn door hardware. If there's no existing header or backing, install a minimum 1×6 hardwood board (3/4 in thick × 5-1/2 in wide) that extends past the track to the next stud on each side. Unlike standard sliding hardware, ceiling mount is not compatible with bifold systems.

Standard duty J-strap bifold supports panels up to 24 in wide and 84 in tall at 62.5 lbs each. For larger or heavier panels, our heavy duty bifold hardware handles panels up to 48 in × 108 in at 200 lbs each. For custom track lengths email us at info@thebarndoorhardwarestore.com — custom lengths are priced the same as the next standard size.
