Common Questions

Three situations: your panels weigh more than 62.5 lbs each, your panels are thicker than 1-3/8 in, or your panels are wider than 24 in or taller than 84 in. If all three are within standard duty range, standard duty hardware is less expensive and fully sufficient. When in doubt about panel weight, calculate: a solid hardwood panel at 24 in × 84 in × 1-3/8 in runs roughly 40–55 lbs depending on species — comfortably within standard duty range. Reclaimed wood, oversized panels, or thick slab doors are the primary drivers for heavy duty.

Delrin is a quiet, smooth-rolling engineered polymer wheel — an upgrade from the standard steel wheels included in the heavy duty kit. If your panels are under 100 lbs each, Delrin wheels roll more quietly. If your panels are over 100 lbs, steel wheels are the right choice for the load. Delrin is available in black finish only.

Because both panels fold together rather than sliding flat along the wall. Goldberg Brothers heavy duty hardware folds two panels into just 5 in of depth beside the opening — regardless of how wide the individual panels are. A standard sliding door requires wall clearance equal to the full door width. A 2-door bifold with 48 in panels needs just 5 in on the stack side.

Yes — a solid header is required. Heavy duty bifold carries significantly more weight than standard hardware, so the header needs to be well-secured. If there's no existing header or backing, install a minimum 1×6 hardwood board (3/4 in thick × 5-1/2 in wide) that extends past the track to the next stud on each side. Ceiling mount is not compatible with bifold systems.

Heavy duty bifold handles panels up to 48 in wide and 108 in tall at 200 lbs each — the largest configuration in the standard bifold lineup. If your project requires something beyond these dimensions, email us at info@thebarndoorhardwarestore.com and we'll advise on options. For custom track lengths, pricing is the same as the next standard size.
