Common Questions

A one-way setup stacks all panels to a single side — you need clearance on only one side of the opening. Biparting splits from the center with half the panels stacking to each side — you need clearance on both sides. The trade-off is that biparting gives a naturally symmetrical look when open without any extra sizing work, while one-way requires careful panel sizing to achieve the same visual balance. See our bifold measuring guide for a full comparison.

The alignment plate attaches at the bottom of the two center-facing panels — the panels that meet in the middle when the doors are closed. It holds those two panels aligned and flush against each other for a clean, consistent center seam. The kit includes one alignment plate set (two pieces).

For a fully clear opening, only 5 in of wall clearance is needed on each side. Goldberg Brothers bifold hardware stacks two panels into just 5 in of depth — so a 4-door biparting with two panels stacking per side requires 5 in on each side regardless of panel width. The minimum 1/2 in refers to the space between the track end and any hard obstruction on the pivot side — but the stacking clearance itself is just 5 in.

Yes — 4-door biparting stacks only two panels per side, so the J-strap front-face hardware doesn't obstruct the fold. J-strap is not compatible for 4-door and 6-door one-way configurations where all panels stack to one side, because the roller assemblies on the door face prevent a tight stack of more than two panels. For 4-door biparting, both J-strap and J top mount are compatible.

Standard duty J-strap bifold supports panels up to 24 in wide and 84 in tall at 62.5 lbs each. For larger or heavier panels, our heavy duty bifold hardware handles panels up to 48 in × 108 in at 200 lbs each.
