Panel width: Sized based on how much coverage you need over the opening — see the panel sizing section below for formulas and worked examples.

Panel height: Opening height + 1 in. Leaves 5/8 to 1-1/4 in of floor clearance, adjustable at the wall-mounted pivot during installation.

Panel thickness: 1-1/4 in to 1-3/8 in. For thicker panels, heavy duty bifold handles 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 in.

Maximum panel size: 24 in wide × 84 in tall per panel. For larger panels see our heavy duty bifold hardware, which supports panels up to 48 in × 108 in.

Ceiling clearance above door: 5-1/2 in required between the top of the door panels and the ceiling.

Wall clearance on stack side: For a fully clear opening, 10 in of clear wall is needed on the stack side — four panels fold into two 2-panel folds, each taking 5 in of depth, for 10 in total. A minimum 1/2 in clearance is also required between the end of the track and any adjacent wall on the pivot side — this space allows the pivot-side panel to rotate freely during operation.

Wall header: A solid header above the opening is required for track mounting. If there is no existing header or backing in the wall, we recommend installing a minimum 1×6 hardwood board (3/4 in thick × 5-1/2 in wide) that extends past the length of the track to the next stud or structural support point on each side. Ceiling mount is not compatible with bifold hardware.

The fixed panel attaches to the wall-mounted pivot. The outermost panel carries the pull handle and is the one you grip to open and close. All four panels are connected in a chain by hinge sets at each fold point.

A latch and flush pull are not included — add them before ordering to avoid a second shipment. Soft close is not compatible with bifold hardware.

This kit includes one 4 in pull handle. A latch and flush pull are not included:

4-door one-way sizing is based on total panel width — the combined width of all four panels — not the rough opening. The track length you select should equal your total panel width. For a full walkthrough see our bifold measuring guide.

Minimum coverage (doors close over the opening with a small overlap on each side):
Total panel width = opening + 3 in · Each panel = (opening + 3 in) ÷ 4
Example: 48 in opening → total = 51 in → each panel = 12.75 in, round up to 13 in

Fully clear — symmetrical (recommended) (equal overlap on both sides):
Total panel width = opening + 20 in · Each panel = (opening + 20 in) ÷ 4
Example: 48 in opening → total = 68 in → each panel = 17 in

The symmetrical layout — which uses equal panel widths on both sides of the opening center — ensures the installation looks balanced over the opening when closed, even though all panels stack to one side when open.
