Common Questions

In a four-panel stack, all panels fold and compress against each other. J-strap hardware mounts to the front face of the door — in a tight multi-panel stack those roller assemblies on the door face obstruct the panels from folding cleanly and can scratch adjacent panels. J top mount hardware mounts to the top edge of each panel, keeping both door faces completely clear so all four panels can fold and stack without interference. This limitation applies to any one-way configuration with more than two panels.

For a fully clear opening, 10 in of clear wall is needed on the stack side — four panels fold into two 2-panel folds, each taking 5 in of depth, for 10 in total. The pivot side requires a minimum 1/2 in clearance between the end of the track and any adjacent wall — this allows the pivot-side panel to rotate freely during operation, but no stacking space is needed there. This is one of the practical advantages of a 4-door one-way over a standard sliding door, which would need full door-width clearance on the stack side.

In a one-way setup, all four panels stack to a single side — you need 10 in of clearance on the stack side and only 1/2 in on the pivot side. In biparting, the panels split from the center with two stacking to each side — you need 5 in of clearance on both sides and get a naturally symmetrical look when open. If clearance exists on only one side, one-way is your option. If both sides are clear, biparting typically looks better when open. See our bifold measuring guide for a full comparison.

In a one-way setup the panels don't split evenly — all four stack to one side. To make the doors look centered over the opening when closed, the total panel coverage needs to extend equally on both sides of the opening center. This requires significantly more total panel width than a one-way minimum, which only needs 3 in of additional coverage. If neither symmetry over the opening nor a fully clear opening matters for your installation, the minimum coverage formula (opening + 3 in) is sufficient and uses narrower panels.

Standard duty J top mount bifold supports panels up to 24 in wide and 84 in tall at 62.5 lbs each. For larger or heavier panels, our heavy duty bifold hardware handles panels up to 48 in × 108 in at 200 lbs each.
