Common Questions

Both mount to the top edge of the door with no visible straps on the front face. The difference is profile: the J top mount has a slight J-shaped curve in the hanger arm above the door; the straight top mount is completely flat. From the front, the visual result is nearly identical — both give you a door that appears to float below the track. The J top mount has a 100 lb capacity vs. 75 lbs here, so if you're between 75 and 100 lbs the J top mount is the right call.

A standard hollow-core interior door runs 25–35 lbs. A lightweight solid-core door runs 50–80 lbs depending on size. A solid wood door starts around 80–100 lbs and goes up quickly. The straight top mount is well suited to hollow-core and lightweight solid-core panels — it's not the right hardware for solid wood slabs. If you're not sure of your door's weight, describe the material and dimensions in an email and we'll give you a reasonable estimate.

Top edge mounting limits the load geometry compared to front face mounting, and the straight profile distributes that load differently than the J-shape in the J top mount. Both factors contribute to the lower rating. It's not a quality issue — Goldberg Brothers engineering is consistent across the lineup. It's a constraint of the mounting position and geometry for this specific hanger style.

If your door is between 75 and 100 lbs, the J top mount kit gives you the same strap-free front face with slightly more capacity. If you need more than 100 lbs with a top mount style, adding additional rollers is an option — email us at info@thebarndoorhardwarestore.com with your door weight and dimensions and we'll put together options and pricing.

Yes — soft close is worth it regardless of door weight on any bedroom, bathroom, shared-wall, or high-traffic door. On a lighter door the deceleration feels smooth and deliberate rather than abrupt. It can be added before checkout or retrofitted after installation.
