Hidden roller hardware keeps the rolling mechanism behind the door rather than above and in front of it. The track mounts to the wall at the header the same way standard barn door hardware does, and the roller still rides along the top of the track — but the assembly is positioned behind the door panel, so it's not visible from the front.
The result is a cleaner profile: no visible rollers, no visible hangers. What you still see after installation: the track face, track stops, and mounting hardware. This is surface-mounted hardware — no wall modification, no routing, no changes to the door itself. If you've come across "hidden" barn door systems that require the door to be hollowed out or the wall to be recessed, this is not that.
The typical customer is someone who wants the function of a sliding barn door with a more refined or modern look, or someone who wants the door panel to travel as close to the ceiling as possible. Hidden roller is not a substitute for ceiling-mount hardware — the top of the door still needs at least 4-3/8 in of clearance above the top of the opening for the hardware to fit.
How hidden roller hardware works
The roller assembly attaches to the back of the door. The roller itself still rides along the top of the track — same as standard hardware — but because the assembly is mounted to the door's back face rather than its top edge, it sits behind the door as it slides. The hardware is doing the same mechanical job as a standard kit; it's just positioned so the door panel conceals it from view.
The wall offset — something to know before you order
Because the roller assembly sits behind the door rather than above it, the door hangs approximately 1 in off the wall. Standard sliding hardware sits at about 3/8 in. That extra distance is usually not a problem, but it matters if you're fitting the door into a tight reveal, a narrow hallway, or any situation where the gap between the door face and an adjacent surface is a concern. Measure and account for it before ordering.
Header clearance — the spec most people miss
For the hardware to fit, the top of the door must be at least 4-3/8 in above the top of the rough opening. This is a firm requirement, not a recommendation.
Most customers who run into this discover it after measuring the door and opening without accounting for hardware clearance. If your ceiling is low, if the door is unusually tall relative to the opening, or if you're working with limited space above the header, measure carefully before ordering. Hidden roller hardware gets the mechanism closer to the ceiling than standard hardware does — but it still needs that 4-3/8 in gap to function. It is not a replacement for ceiling-mount hardware.
For all barn door hardware installations, we recommend installing into either solid blocking in the wall or a header board — at minimum a 1×6 hardwood — to ensure a secure mount.
Track length
Track length is the most common ordering mistake with hidden roller kits. The same rule applies as with standard sliding hardware: the track must be at least 2× the door width for a full, unobstructed opening. Measure the door width — not the rough opening.

Note: hidden roller hardware requires 1 in of wall offset — the door sits 1 in away from the wall surface to accommodate the roller assembly behind the door. Confirm you have adequate clearance for this offset before ordering.

Finishes
Hidden roller hardware is Goldberg Brothers only and available in four finishes: matte black, black, arch bronze, and silver metallic. The full 17-finish range is not available for this product. Lead time is 10–15 days — each kit is made to order.
For finish matching with handles: matte black hardware → matte black texture handles; arch bronze → arch bronze handles; silver metallic → silver metallic handles; black → black handles.
