How 2-door bifold works
A 2-door bifold uses two panels hinged together at the center. One end of the assembly attaches to a sliding carrier on the overhead track. The other end attaches to a fixed pivot bracket on the pivot side of the opening. When you push the door open, the panels fold accordion-style — the hinge bends while the sliding end travels along the track — and the folded assembly stacks compactly beside the opening.
The result: the panels occupy approximately 5 in (Goldberg Brothers) or 6 in (house value line) of width when fully folded, regardless of how wide the individual panels are. This is what makes bifold viable for openings where a standard sliding door would need the full door width of clear wall beside the opening.
Sizing your 2-door bifold
Track length for bifold equals the total panel width — not 2× the panel width as with standard sliding hardware. Note that Goldberg Brothers and house value line use different overlap formulas for a fully clear opening.
| Coverage goal | GB total panel width | HVL total panel width | Track length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum coverage | Opening + 3 in | Opening + 3 in | = Total panel width |
| Fully clear, asymmetrical | Opening + 6 in | Opening + 7 in | = Total panel width |
| Fully clear, symmetrical (recommended) | Opening + 10 in | Opening + 12 in | = Total panel width |
Example for a 36 in opening (GB, symmetrical, fully clear): Total panel width = 46 in · Track = 46 in · Each panel ≈ 23 in wide
Maximum opening coverage: up to 93 in with a 2-door bifold. For wider openings, see our 4-door biparting bifold collection.

Hanger styles
| Style | How it looks | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| J-strap | Curved strap visible on door face, wraps over the roller. Traditional barn door aesthetic. | Farmhouse, rustic, industrial interiors — any space where the hardware is part of the design |
| J top mount | Mounts to the top edge of the door — no hardware visible on the door face. Clean, minimal look. | Modern and contemporary interiors where the door panel itself is the design feature |
Both styles are available in standard duty and heavy duty. J-strap and J top mount use the same track — the difference is how the hanger connects to the door panel.
Choosing the right tier — capacity and door thickness
The primary decision between standard duty, heavy duty, and house value line is your door panel weight and thickness. All Goldberg Brothers tiers carry the full 17-color powder coat lineup — the weight and thickness of your panels determine the right tier, not the finish.
| Goldberg Brothers standard duty | Goldberg Brothers heavy duty | House value line | |
|---|---|---|---|
| System capacity | 125 lbs total (62.5 lbs per panel) | 400 lbs total (200 lbs per panel) | 180 lbs total (90 lbs per panel) |
